Planetum represents a unique cultural institution formed by merging Štefánik Observatory, Ďáblice Observatory and the Prague Planetarium into a single organization dedicated to astronomy, science education and public outreach.
The newly created institution required a brand identity capable of bringing these historically significant organizations together under one clear and contemporary name. The goal was to create a unified identity that reflects both scientific exploration and accessibility for a broad public audience.
Matbold was invited to develop the name, visual identity and brand system for the new institution.
The name Planetum was developed to express the core idea behind the institution - a place where people can explore the universe, astronomy and space science in an engaging and accessible way.
The name is short, memorable and internationally understandable, making it suitable for a cultural institution that welcomes both local visitors and international audiences.
The visual identity draws inspiration from the structure and movement of celestial bodies. Clean geometric forms and a clear typographic system reflect the scientific nature of the institution while remaining visually engaging and approachable.
The identity system was designed to work across a wide range of applications - from exhibitions and educational programs to digital communication and signage for the different observatories.
Through a carefully balanced visual language, the brand connects science, education and culture under one coherent identity.
Planetum’s mission is not only scientific observation but also education and inspiration. The institution hosts exhibitions, lectures, public observations and educational programs that introduce astronomy to visitors of all ages.
The new brand identity helps communicate this mission more clearly, positioning Planetum as a modern cultural institution where science meets curiosity and discovery.
