A New Era for Prague Planetarium

A New Era for Prague Planetarium

Prague Planetarium has entered a new era. After a major reconstruction, the iconic institution has reopened its doors with a groundbreaking technological upgrade that places it among the most advanced planetariums in the world.

At the heart of the transformation is a monumental new LED dome measuring 22 meters in diameter, composed of tens of millions of individual diodes. Unlike traditional projection systems, the LED technology delivers extraordinary brightness, contrast and resolution, creating an immersive visual environment where the boundaries between science and experience begin to dissolve. Visitors are no longer simply watching the cosmos - they are surrounded by it.

The installation is one of the largest fully digital dome screens in Europe and represents a major step forward in astronomical visualization. Whether simulating distant galaxies, exploring the surface of Mars or observing the night sky above Prague, the new system offers a level of detail and realism that was previously impossible to achieve.

But the transformation of the planetarium goes beyond technology. The reopening also marks a broader cultural shift - positioning the institution not only as a scientific facility but as a modern public space where education, exploration and immersive storytelling come together.

As the project evolved, a new identity was needed to reflect this ambition.

Matbold was invited to develop the name, narrative and visual identity for the institution - a brand capable of representing both the planetarium and the observatories of the city of Prague under a unified concept.

The result was Planetum.

The name evokes the universe itself while remaining simple, memorable and internationally understandable. It captures the essence of the institution: a place where curiosity about the cosmos becomes accessible to everyone.

The visual identity was designed to balance scientific precision with a sense of wonder and discovery. Inspired by the geometry of celestial systems and the rhythm of planetary movement, the identity system translates astronomy into a contemporary graphic language capable of functioning across exhibitions, educational programs, digital platforms and public communication.

Planetariums have always occupied a unique position between science and imagination. The new Planetum identity embraces this duality - presenting astronomy as both knowledge and experience.

With the reopening of the Prague Planetarium and the unveiling of its extraordinary LED dome, the institution now offers one of the most immersive astronomy experiences in Europe.

For Matbold, contributing to this new chapter by shaping the name and identity of Planetum was an opportunity to help bring a vision of exploration and discovery into orbit.
